"When I first got out, people in Hollywood were like: 'Why did you get your M.B.A.? You would have been better off sitting at someone's desk answering phones,' " he recalled. "But it certainly has been helpful for me now that we're doing bigger deals. It was helpful even before I started my company, putting together financing for projects and closing deals."

Another benefit of an M.B.A. degree, especially from a top-notch school, is the public perception of it — and, by default, its holder — according to a 2005 report by the University of Maryland. The study found that recruiters paid higher salaries to graduates of top-tier business schools compared with those from less prominent ones. "The school's prominence provides legitimacy in the eyes of third parties," said Violina P. Rindova, an associate professor of strategy at the University of Maryland and co-author of the study.

"The real value of an Ivy League business degree is arguably not the education itself, but the screening of intelligence, drive and past accomplishments that the schools do," said Ben Dattner, founding principal of Dattner Consulting in New York. "Just like with undergraduate degrees, if you're smart enough to get into a top-tier school, you're likely to inspire confidence."

MICHELLE MADDEN, 39, a 1994 Harvard Business School graduate who lives in New York and worked at an online media company which she and her partners sold in 2001, agrees. "People tend to give you the benefit of the doubt that you're somewhat intelligent," she said. "They assume that if H.B.S. has done the screening, they don't need to concern themselves with the intelligence screener."

The degree also gave Ms. Madden the confidence to leave the business world several years ago to pursue interests in photography and mountain climbing before resuming work as a consultant. "Today, there's much less of a stigma to taking time off and changing careers," she said. "With the M.B.A., I felt I could do it and return to work without much problem."

Others say that they preferred actually being an entrepreneur to just contemplating becoming one. Jamie Rosen, who quit Harvard Business School in 1995 after getting funding for a software start-up, sold his company in 2004 and founded Memorystone Publishing, a company that produces digital photo albums, a year later.

"The reason I went to B-school was to learn to be an entrepreneur, and here was an opportunity to build a business and get paid for it," said Mr. Rosen, 35, of his decision to leave Harvard. "I'm not necessarily happy that I didn't finish, but I don't regret not going back because I enjoyed what I was doing."

Ms. Malone, one of the subjects of Mr. Richman's documentary, said she never expected to enjoy Harvard as much as she did. "I went in with great skepticism," she said with a laugh. But what Ms. Malone, 38, found at Harvard surprised her — "a pretty friendly, warm, welcoming, nice place."

After Harvard, Ms. Malone spent a year working at the Federal Communications Commission and then helped begin an Internet telephone start-up, which eventually went public. She quit in 1999 to write her first novel, as yet unpublished, before joining Google in June 2004. Like Ms. Madden, Ms. Malone said her degree allowed her to take time off while knowing that it would be easy to get another job.

"It's this big safety net; it's a credential that makes it easier to get a job later," she said. "Maybe life shouldn't be that way, but it is what it is."

ABOUT a year before Adam Richman was to graduate from the Harvard Business School in 1996, he took on an extracurricular project. It was long before the Internet bubble inflated and burst, and well before one of the school's graduates landed in the White House. Mr. Richman wondered: What was the real-world value of a master's in business administration, especially one from the iviest of Ivies? Was it, as widely perceived, an ace in the hole, a get-out-of-jail-free card, a ticket to the good life?

To that end, Mr. Richman decided to track a core group of his Harvard classmates, to converse with them about their personal and professional aspirations, and then to revisit them every five years until 2026. He also decided to film them along the way, à la "7 Up," Michael Apted's celebrated documentary series, which chronicled the lives of the same 14 people every seven years.

"I wanted to know how students made their career and leadership decisions, how they defined success," said Mr. Richman, 36, the co-founder of Double Nickel Entertainment, a television and film production company. His academic adviser, Monica C. Higgins, an associate professor at the business school, became a consultant for the series, titled "Building Career Foundations," which she uses for case-study work in her classroom.

"We're very interested in how external shocks affect careers — like 9/11, the dot-com boom and bust — and this class was right before the dot-com boom," said Professor Higgins, 41. "We wondered: 'How do people make the decision to drop everything and go after a dream? Who makes those type of choices and why?' People ask alums, 'What was the most important class you took in school?' But the real test comes once you're out."

In that regard, their documentary is a litmus test of sorts about how much bang Harvard Business School graduates get for their buck after their academic sojourn to Boston. It is, of course, a narrow, microcosmic gauge, limited by the number of people Mr. Richman and Professor Higgins are following, the questions they ask and the complexities of education and personal choice.

Even so, their work offers a window into the value of a Harvard degree that carries a two-year tuition bill of more than $70,000 and, more generally, onto the overall utility of any M.B.A. degree.

THE popularity of the degrees has surged. In 1970, for example, business schools handed out 26,490 M.B.A.'s, according to the Department of Education. By 2004, after a period marked by an economic boom and heightened competition for top-flight business careers, that figure had jumped to 139,347. But opinion and data appear divided on the tangible benefits of an M.B.A.

"The M.B.A. is the most versatile degree out there — most of the others are very field specific, but you can apply an M.B.A. to any field," said Rachel Edgington, a research director for the Graduate Management Admission Council, a nonprofit group in McLean, Va., that is overseen by leading business schools and administers annual admission exams.

But others advocate hands-on experience over academic buffing and polishing. "M.B.A. programs train the wrong people in the wrong ways with the wrong consequences," said Henry Mintzberg, a management professor at McGill University in Montreal. "You can't create a manager in a classroom. If you give people who aren't managers the impression that you turned them into one, you've created hubris."

In 2003, Professor Mintzberg tracked the performance of 19 students who graduated from the Harvard Business School in 1990 and were at the top of their class academically. Ten of the 19 were "utter failures," he said. "Another four were very questionable, at least," he added. "So five out of 19 did well."

Research varies on the value of an M.B.A. A 2006 study by the Lubin School of Business at Pace University, looking at 482 companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange, found that only 162 of them had chief executives with graduate degrees in business. The companies with chief executives who went to more prestigious schools did no better than those who went to less prestigious schools, according to the study. Why this was so is unclear.

"One possibility is that if you don't have a graduate degree from a top school then you have to work that much harder to succeed," said Aron A. Gottesman, an associate professor at Pace and a co-author of the study.

On the other hand, Professor Gottesman and a colleague found in a separate study, published earlier this year in the Journal of Empirical Finance, that mutual fund managers with M.B.A.'s from BusinessWeek's 30 top-ranked business schools — including Harvard — generally outperformed other mutual fund managers. Professor Gottesman is not sure why this was so, either. "One possibility is that at higher-quality schools they simply teach better technical skills," he speculated. "Or students at top-tier schools have a higher I.Q."

Wherever the broader value of an M.B.A. degree resides, most graduates themselves appear to be satisfied with their diplomas. According to the 2006 Global M.B.A. Graduate Survey from the Graduate Management Admission Council, 63 percent of M.B.A. alumni described the value of their degree as "outstanding or excellent," when comparing the cost of their degree to the quality of their educations; 29 percent called it "good."

And the subjects of "Building Career Foundations" have told Mr. Richman that they are pleased, indeed, with the professional and personal doors that their Harvard degrees have opened. Mr. Richman and Professor Higgins initially chose four women and six men to be their subjects in 1996 after a lengthy interview process. They surveyed about 130 other students along with their main focus group, asking questions about post-Harvard goals, salary expectations, relationship status and other topics. They also sent similar questionnaires to the same people in 2001 and had their cameras ready to film their core group.

Last weekend, when the class of 1996 returned to the Harvard Business School for its 10-year reunion, Mr. Richman and Professor Higgins were present with their cameras and notepads.

"The experience lets you handle challenges, gives you the confidence to take calculated risks and enables people to pursue passions or dreams that maybe they otherwise couldn't at that point in their life," said Terrence M. Mullen, 39, a subject of the documentary who is a co-founder of Arsenal Capital Partners, a private equity fund in Manhattan.

In 1996 and 2001, Mr. Richman and Professor Higgins asked their 140 subjects how they defined success. Their answers, in descending order of importance, were the same in each of those years: personal satisfaction or "balance," the respect of their peers, and the chief executive's or chief financial officer's post at a corporation. High salaries ranked last each year.

"It did surprise me that the folks coming right out of school would put money last, because they had all this debt," Professor Higgins said. "But they want to have it all."

Respondents to her survey this year offered a different mix of priorities. They said that balance, financial security and corporate power were their top goals, but they placed less emphasis on becoming C.E.O.'s and were more interested in general corporate leadership positions. Ranked last was "respect by peers." Another category that often emerged, Professor Higgins said, was "impact" — defined as making "a real difference" or "a positive difference to society."

Professor Higgins said the focus on "balance" and "happiness" seemed to stem from having or planning to have children, from feelings about the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and from the bursting of the dot-com bubble. "They seemed to have come to realize that certain things are precious in life, not the least of which is family," she said.

At this year's reunion of the documentary's main subjects, it turned out that 6 of the 10 had been involved in Internet businesses previously — four as C.E.O.'s of their own companies, and two as investors in other companies. Five of the 10 had experienced a major career trauma — their businesses collapsed or were taken over or they lost jobs because of layoffs. The other five had invested successfully or cashed in on initial public offerings in companies where they had worked.

The documentary's main subjects now have jobs in various fields. Stephen Klein is executive vice president of Too Far, an arts and entertainment company in San Francisco; Kevin Hall is the chief operating officer of the Broad Foundation, a Los Angeles nonprofit group; Kim Malone is director of online advertising sales for Google Adsense in Mountain View, Calif.; Mareva Grabowski is a bank executive in Athens; Jeff Flemings is a senior executive at Digitas, an advertising and consulting firm in Boston; Clare R. Scherrer is a managing director at Goldman Sachs in New York; Levent Kahraman is a managing director of a New York bank; Cheryl Pegues is the director of business development at Cox Enterprises in Atlanta; and Humphrey Chen is a director at Avaya, a software company in Basking Ridge, N.J.

MR. HALL, 39, pursued a series of corporate jobs after getting his Harvard degree and then founded a company that ran charter schools. At the Broad Foundation, he focuses on improving public education in Los Angeles. "September 11 really reinforced for me that I'm willing and want to devote my energy toward K through 12 from a patriotic standpoint," he said. "I think it's really critical for us as a country to do this."

Mr. Richman, who was a creative writing and drama major when he graduated from Tufts University in 1992, later went to Harvard Business School without formal business training and no plans to seek a corporate job. He did, however, want to do something in television and film, and rather than start as a gofer in Hollywood he applied to business school to "round myself off," he said.

Should You Consider an MBA?

The Master of Business Administration (the MBA) has long been seen as the “magic ticket” for career advancement, but should you consider an MBA despite the lengthy time commitment and potentially high cost?

“There is no doubt that the knowledge and skills acquired in a good MBA program gives the graduate a boost into leadership positions,” said Paul Danos, Dean of Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth University. “We did a survey of Tuck graduates and found that nearly 70 percent of Tuck alumni were in positions of leadership in the organization, that is, CEO, Chairman, Partner, Owner, CFO, etc.” According to Danos, Tuck students often more than double their salaries.

Bill Brady, director of Graduate Career Management, the Marriott School of Management, Brigham Young University, agrees. MBA’s are “like bachelor’s degrees in the 90’s,” said Brady, and since MBAs are becoming available by so many resources, “it is more common to expect managers to have the degree.”

MBA benefits abound. Mindy Storrie, president, MBA Career Services Council and director of MBA Career Services at Kenan-Flagler Business School, the University of North Carolina, adds, “The rewards are immense for a mid-career MBA student. An MBA can be one of the best ways to increase your business knowledge base.”

According to Brady, there are two reasons for obtaining an MBA: first, to obtain advanced skills to “provide a power boost to an individual’s career” and second, to change careers, for example, from retail sales to finance.

According to a 2004 survey by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the majority of the MBA class that graduated in 2004 (54 percent) were using their MBA as a way of changing career tracks. The survey showed that that the average graduate made roughly $56,500 before earning the degree and about $76,000 afterward. GMAC surveyed 6,223 MBA graduates from 128 business schools in 16 countries. Twenty-one percent of the respondents were from outside the United States.

“We have long referred to the MBA as a global currency - a degree that symbolizes value all over the world. To many people, that value comes in the form of career mobility,” said David A. Wilson, president of GMAC.

Daniel R. Nagy, Associate Dean of the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, said that an MBA can aid in a person’s career advancement because “if you start at a higher level post MBA in a career path with clear promotional levels (e.g. brand management, consulting, I-banking, etc.) than you will certainly move quickly through the first several levels of management.” But, “after that careers move at one’s competency level,” Nagy added.

Brady agrees. “Simply getting an MBA is not sufficient to make me successful,” he said, “It gives a knowledge advantage only if that advantage can be effectively applied.”

Job Experience Needed First

The key to success, according to experts, is getting relevant job experience before beginning your MBA. According to Storrie, “An MBA can always be valuable, but I believe at least a few years of experience is best, and five or more is even better.” Storrie explained that students can relate more effectively if they have already “been exposed to similar situations and can identify first-hand with the situations being discussed.”

Brady said he uses an analogy of a carpenter when advising students to get experience before getting their MBA: “If I give you a hammer, nails and wood, and tell you to nail the wood together, even though you have never done this in your life, you will probably find a way to accomplish the instructions. If instead I give you the instructions and have you go watch a journey carpenter, you will see the carpenter reach in the tool box, pull out a staple gun and nail the wood together.

“An MBA is roughly a box of business tools. If I give you the tools after you have some experience, you will probably see practical applications and use more of the tools,” explained Brady.

MBA Applications Dipped

Nagy said that the overwhelming reason that people went back to business schools for an MBA in the 1990s through early 2000 was to obtain the “magic ticket” to help those “stuck in business careers they did not like move into more attractive careers.”

But “the color faded from this bloom after the dot-com bust and post 911 and applications started to dip,” Nagy said, yet “there was still an attractiveness to the MBA, especially from a top school, that it could help career changers.” Nagy predicts that the MBA will regain some of the attraction lost in recent years because of the market rebound. Also, consulting firms and I-banks are returning to his campus (the Fuqua School of Business) in “big numbers” to recruit students. Typically half of the hires in the late nineties came from those two industries, Nagy explained.

According to the 2004 GMAC survey, improvement in the economy has allowed more companies to hire new MBAs. The number of recruiters unable to hire recent MBA graduates dropped by half this year - from 23 percent in 2003 to 12 percent in 2004. Top jobs for hiring by recruiters were finance, marketing and accounting - a continuing trend from the previous year. A total of 1,300 recruiters representing 1,004 companies participated in the GMAC survey.

In another recent survey, the MBA Career Services Council also concluded that the job market is improving for MBA graduates. On-campus recruiting has increased by 81 percent and a higher percentage of 2004 graduates received at least one job offer within 3 months of graduation. Ninety-three percent of the 57 schools surveyed predicted that the 2004-5 job market would be even better than this past year. Top industries for recruitment included finance and consulting.

Are you a job-seeker who is looking for more responsibility and pay, seeking more leverage in obtaining a work/life balance, or contemplating a move into management -- and are considering returning to school to get your MBA? Or perhaps a job-seeker exploring changing careers by going back to school for your MBA? Or perhaps a consultant looking to add a credential to your dossier. Or perhaps a college junior or senior contemplating going straight through and obtaining your MBA right after your undergraduate degree?

Regardless of your reasons, if you are contemplating attending graduate school to obtain your MBA, you should read this article before you make your final decision. This article will take you through all the important issues you need to contemplate before making your decision of whether -- and when -- to obtain your MBA.

What is an MBA? It's a Master of Business Administration degree, granted after one to two years of graduate-level university study that provides training in the theory and practice of business management. The MBA is basically a document that certifies that you have a general competency in all the major functional management roles you'll find in the modern corporation. An MBA is a career accelerator across a number of industries and MBA graduates can usually command higher salaries.

Ideal Time to Get MBA

Finally, there is the question of the economy. Some people think it's a good hedge to get an MBA during an economic slowdown -- a safe haven -- rather than face the tough job market; however, when the economy is bad, even having an MBA is no guarantee of obtaining a lucrative job offer. The best advice? Talk to recruiters and MBA career placement counselors -- and read the current trends in magazines such as Business Week, Success, U.S. News and World Report.

MBA Enrollment Trends
The number of MBA degrees conferred annually has seen explosive growth over the last few decades, going from under 5,000 MBAs in 1960 to more than 100,000 MBAs in 2000. Enrollment is also influenced by the economy, and as the economy turns toward a downturn, both recent grads and displaced workers head back to earn their MBAs.

Because of the growing number of graduate business programs that confer more and more MBA degrees, the degree itself is not as special or highly-valued as in the past. An MBA alone will not be the magic key to the door of career and job-hunting success.

Types of MBA
One of the questions you'll need to answer is whether you are interested in a general MBA, which is often shorter in duration, or a specialized MBA, which may take longer but make you more marketable.

Regardless of the type of MBA, the core topics you'll encounter include:

Quantitative analysis

Marketing

Organizational behavior
Specialized MBAs offer more advanced study in a particular area of business (such as marketing) or a particular industry (such as higher education).

Finally, you'll need to determine the value of the "name" of the program you are considering. If you are searching for a big push that fast tracks your career, snagging an MBA from one of the top schools in the country may be the ticket. But, if you're looking to simply get ahead and move your careers along, don't discount the many MBA programs that are unranked but that offer you the degree and value you need. MBA Costs -- and Returns
According to one salary guide, an MBA is worth about $10-30,000 a year over a bachelor’s degree, but the salary increase you could see may be much less -- or much more. Factors that can affect your salary include:

whether you stay with your current employer or seek a job with a new employer.
the amount of relevant experience you have for the job you are seeking.
the reputation of the graduate school you attended.
the type of job you are seeking -- and the level of supply/demand for workers.
the industries where you are seeking a job.
the location of the jobs you are seeking.
But don't forget to factor in the costs as well, with the average cost of graduate study leading to an MBA at about $30,000. Tuition is about $50,000 at Wake Forest University, one of the premier MBA programs, while closer to $12,000 at my school, Stetson University.

What an MBA Can Do for Your Career
If you're looking for the MBA to help you get into the executive suite, it may be just the ticket you need. According to a study by Accountemps, a global temporary staffing service for accounting and finance professionals, 80 percent of executives responding to the survey said that a graduate degree in business is still important to reach senior management ranks within most companies.

And there is growing evidence that having an MBA not only gives you more leverage in dictating new job titles and salary, but also gives you leverage in achieving a better balance between work (read: fewer hours working) and life outside work.

M.B.A. Expected Starting Salaries

Just as recruiting has increased in the United States, M.B.A. salaries also have risen—as have tuition costs, which, at the top end, average about $100,000. M.B.A. graduates want a ROI on the substantial investment in their education, and it looks like they’re getting it.

Salary Ranges for the M.B.A.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) puts average salaries from the top M.B.A. programs in 2006 at $90,000; first-year base salaries start (not including bonuses) at $50,000 to $75,000, with more than 40 percent of new M.B.A. recruits starting their new jobs after graduating at $75,000 a year and up.

The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) Corporate Recruiters Survey Report estimated the 2006 starting annual base salary for new M.B.A. graduates at $80,809, compared to the $78,040 that graduates got in 2005. All in all, average salaries have steadily gone up at 21 percent for the last seven years. Once M.B.A. students hit seniority levels, their salaries can rise up to 50 percent.

The GMAC Estimated Total Annual Compensation for New M.B.A. Graduates in 2006 compared salaries (including base salary and additional compensation) in different industries:

Perks and bonuses come with these figures. Some companies give yearly bonuses of $25,000 and add other things like tuition reimbursements, car allowances, and relocation costs, which can add about another $15,000. Obviously, these figures differ from company to company. M.B.A. graduates will have to look at the match between their area of specialization with the potential employer, their own experience before getting the M.B.A., the geographic location and its cost of living, and the ranking of the M.B.A. program within the business community.

Up and Coming MBA Concentrations

With the economy up, recruiting for M.B.A. graduates has climbed and is very likely to continue trending upward in 2007, according to the Graduate Management Admission Council’s (GMAC) Corporate Recruiters Survey for 2006-2007. The traditional employers of M.B.A. graduates—consulting, financial services, and consumer goods—are still at the top of the list, but recruiters for marketing, health-care, and biotech companies also are hiring. The National Association of colleges and Employers’ (NACE) Job Outlook 2007 states that manufacturing is aggressive hiring and expects to hire 32.4 percent more M.B.A.'s in 2006-07 than they hired in 2005-06. Real estate, marketing, and investment banking are also up and coming, while on the west coast, the technology sector is specifically growing for M.B.A. graduates.

The report also cites a 15.4 percent increase in service employee hiring. Schools reporting to the M.B.A. Career Services Council say that “recruiting activity is up across nearly all sectors” and that the bellwether recruiting industries are significantly higher than others.

The GMAC lists 10 sectors they see as good ones for M.B.A. graduates: finance, marketing, accounting, general management, operations and logistics, information technology, consulting, human resources/organization management, entrepreneurship, and health care/pharmaceuticals.

As for management levels in 2006, more M.B.A. graduates took on general management, human resources, and operations/logistics positions than in previous years. Plus, there were more job openings for midlevel managers in 2006. NACE’s 2006’s Job Outlook stated that 45 percent of M.B.A. graduates were looking at different industries and fields from the ones in which they worked before getting their M.B.A. degrees.

A significant amount of future growth may come from overseas operations of domestic corporations. With the continued advance of telecommunications as the primary medium for data transfer, banks and corporations disregard many commercial barriers between nations. This borderless, global market is an exciting prospect for ambitious M.B.A. graduates. Those who bring an understanding of how to manage operations that are carried out in countries in different time zones with diverse cultures will find themselves in demand.

In particular, the tech companies, investment banks, consulting firms, and consumer goods companies want to hire M.B.A.'s with overseas experience and the ability to work with teams from other countries. Global experience, whether gained on the job or during a semester abroad, is a critical job requirement. M.B.A. students have several options to choose from to gain international experience. They can study abroad at a partner institution. Exchange programs, in which students spend an entire term overseas, are another possibility. Shorter options are intensive two- to three-week courses on specific subjects in overseas locations

For anyone sold on the benefits of an MBA degree, the primary question is not whether to pursue an MBA, but when to do it. Does it make more sense to continue on immediately after college and earn an MBA, or is it better to get some work experience first?

Those choosing to pursue an MBA generally expect it to open up new career opportunities, but among this group there are significantly differing schools of thought on when it makes sense to get the degree. Which is the right course may depend on the person and the circumstances, so first consider the pros and cons of each side of the argument before deciding.

No Time like the Present
There are several arguments in favor of going on directly from earning an undergraduate degree to pursuing an MBA degree:

* Why wait to reap the benefits of an MBA? If the degree really does open the door to new career opportunities, what's the sense in waiting?
* Don't risk having your plans derailed. You may plan to gain a couple years of work experience and then go back for your MBA, but there are plenty of things that can get in the way in the meantime--family, health, motivation, changes in financial position, etc. Just because you have the motive, means, and opportunity to pursue an MBA now doesn't mean you can count on having those things in the future.
* Go while you are still in scholastic mode. Ever try exercising after letting yourself go for a couple years? It's not easy to get back into something challenging. Not that work isn't difficult too--it is probably more difficult than school, but it requires a different set of "intellectual muscles". Getting back into studying and test-taking doesn't always come naturally after some time away from it.

There Is No Teacher like Experience

Those are all valid arguments, but the counter-points for waiting to earn your MBA are worth considering as well:

* Gaining some work experience first can help you determine how you want to concentrate your MBA studies. For example, if your employment experience triggers a desire to eventually start your own business, you may want to enroll in an entrepreneurship program. An MBA incorporating an entrepreneurship program will teach you advanced business skills focused on the challenges of starting a business.
* Earning a paycheck and paying down some of those college loans may put you on more solid financial footing before you pursue another degree.
* Your work experience may be so successful that you decide you don't need an MBA after all. Some time in the workplace should help you determine whether you can reach your goals under your own power or if you'll need the extra boost of an MBA degree.

Have Your Cake and Eat It

Then there's the "have your cake and eat it" school of thought, which advocates pursuing an MBA concurrent with gaining work experience. With the recent increase in opportunities to pursue MBA degrees online, this path may be especially viable. Some employers even offer education benefits, paying some or all of their employees' continuing education costs.

Whether you earn your MBA degree online or in the classroom, working and taking classes at the same time can be a heavy burden. Juggling these priorities will certainly require sacrifices in other phases of your life. However, strongly committing to your new career both at work and in class could impress your employer and push you ahead of your competition. Also, you might find that working and going to school complement one another, as your work experiences add dimension to what you are learning, and your coursework gives you new insights to apply on the job.

Find Your Own Path to an MBA and New Career Opportunities

The benefits of an MBA degree can be realized either before, after, or concurrent with gaining work experience. So choose your own way--to quote German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche "... you can never climb in vain: either you will reach a point higher up today, or you will be training your powers so that you will be able to climb higher tomorrow." The option of earning an MBA degree online just adds more ways in which you can customize the approach to suit your needs and circumstances. Hype Tech: How Online MBA Grads Can Stir Up Crowds--and Profits

When a May 2007 study by Strategy Analytics found that 90 percent of cellphone owners rated the new Apple iPhone superior to their current mobile devices, market analysts were astounded. Why? Because the survey was completed two months before the iPhone went on sale! The marketing gurus at Apple had, once again, created a hype flurry that triggered insatiable hunger for a product that consumers could only dream about holding in their hands.

Students lining up for online marketing courses or MBA degree programs would do well to learn from Apple's co-founder and virtuoso of hype, Steven Jobs. Jobs (who just happens to be on Disney's board of directors) knows how to sell pricey chip-driven devices to young consumers as if they were one buck candy bars for children.

Remember the 1984 Super Bowl commercial that revolutionized the way Apple sold computers? What’s the difference between patron lines snaking around the block to see Star Wars or to buy a new gadget? When Hollywood-style marketing meets high tech, the result is hype tech.

"Jobs is a showman who creates an aura about his products that defies marketing," 40-year marketing veteran Peter Sealey told The San Francisco Chronicle. "You can't buy the kind of marketing he gets. He brings the best of Hollywood to a superb array of consumer electronics and he does it with élan and skill. He's the best in the world at doing that, bar none."

Apple sold 270,000 of the new iPhones in the first 30 hours.

Tracking the Master of Marketing
Late in 2006, IT Wire was already reporting that, "somehow Apple has managed to convince the public (that it can create a mobile with iPod music capabilities) without spending one cent on overt marketing and even admitting that it is going into the cell phone business. That in itself could be the subject of a market post-graduate thesis." And still, at this point, no one had seen a prototype, much less the phone.

Tease, tease, tease. Jobs' first overt marketing ploy was to yank an iPhone prototype from his pocket at the January 2007 MacWorld Conference and Expo, telling astonished onlookers that he expected to sell 10 million of the new devices by next year. It mirrored the way Hollywood filmmakers market a horror movie--flash the creature on the screen, but don't let anyone get a good look at it.

Jobs' January performance wasn't the first time hype tech had married marketing strategies to a pop-culture model. When Windows 95 debuted, it did so to the soundtrack of the Rolling Stones "Start Me Up." Then, Microsoft founder Bill Gates demonstrated the software on the Tonight Show.

Tickle-Me Marketing Tactics
Consequently, following his January sneak-peek, Jobs carefully planned a series of consumer snap glimpses of the iPhone at trade shows. Then, announcing a limited initial release, Jobs followed a long-established marketing ploy of suggesting a pending shortage of a desperately needed product. Think how the public went insane on Christmas 1996 when it was announced that there would be a shortage of Tickle-Me Elmo dolls. One the first shopping day, a clerk was injured when hundreds of crazed consumers burst into a toy store.

By May 2007, Time Magazine named Jobs among the "100 Most Influential People in The World." More buzz for the iPhone.

By July 20, marketing media surveyors Blackfriars Communications reported that iPhone news stories surpassed 19,490, outstripping the media hype for the latest Harry Potter book by 6,000 stories.

Just before the sale date, iPhone partner AT&T announced that it was hiring security to handle lines at the activation stores across the county. Rioting consumers? Don't be confused. The security announcement released to the media was all part of the marketing ploy.

Less than a week before Apple stores sold the first unit, high-tech writer Mike McGuire told Fox News that Apple fans--in and of themselves--were the ones who really escalated the frenzy, speculating with unchecked relish on message boards and through volleys of emails, raising the pre-sales status of the iPhone to proportions "somewhere between electricity and sliced bread."

Professionals Strike at the Market
It doesn't take an MBA or even a bachelor's degree in marketing to realize that a promotional genius was set loose on a gadget-hungry nation. It's called viral marketing, and Jobs created an epidemic.

Marketing pros around the country borrow Job's model with varying degrees of success. Mavens and neophytes alike enroll in online MBA and marketing degree programs to master the techniques that drive today's hype tech. And their work often pays dividends. The U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook predicts employment of advertising, marketing, and promotions professionals is expected to increase 18 to 26 percent through 2014.

According to the Ewing Marion Kaufmann Foundation, more than 500,000 new businesses are launched each month. That is a stunningly positive statistic, for a number of reasons. Even so, one consideration for potential entrepreneurs is how to benefit from the experience of entrepreneurs who have gone before--and not fall into common traps. Helping to avoid those traps is perhaps the greatest role a basic business education can play in the process of business formation and management.
Well-Traveled Ground

Those 500,000 new business start-ups every month say a great deal that is positive about the American economic system. New business presents a powerful source of new jobs. The range of unique companies being formed signifies a healthy expression of creative energy. Also, all this entrepreneurship represents a lively dose of make-it-happen effort toward economic betterment: significantly, immigrants have especially high rates of entrepreneurship.

The nature of an entrepreneur is often to be too independent to follow the footsteps of others; however, that doesn't mean it is wise to completely ignore the beaten path. For as unique as each entrepreneurial experience is, there is also much common ground to any business formation. The nuts-and-bolts of business administration--from licensing to bookkeeping to human resources--are fairly similar from one business to another. Even so, these are the tasks that often blindside new entrepreneurs, who are forced to learn the basics of business administration on the fly.

The role of the entrepreneur is to bring the unique elements to the table; the role of education is to teach the more universal lessons.
